It is unforgiving whereas you can flub up a bit in schutzhund and still pass to the next level and you only have to do it once at each level. I can understand the wait on the down on recall thing - it does sort of blow their minds to all of the sudden be told to down when they are joyously running towards you! haha I did that to Sid at a UDC CDX attempt once and got the same feeling as you did about needing to not do that again. She did it, no problem but I could see where it could bring about confusion on the recalls. I started practicing the downs as a down in motion thing instead - like sending her to go after a ball or helper and downing her and then releasing for a reward of a bite afterwards - made it a bit better to not work it on the actual recall - breaking it all down to individual very separate exercises.
