March–In Like a Lion! and Look Ma, Deer!
March 1, 2009 on 11:07 am | In Uncategorized | No CommentsSnowed last night–not alot, but enough to remind us that Winter has not gone the way of the dinasaurs just yet . Spring flowers will have to wait a bit and warmer temps and flabby bellies that need toning before they see the light of day will have a respite due to the winter precip. More snow is forcast for tonight and it is billed to be the biggest snow of this season.
Charlie and Zellie are sleeping quietly, one on the day bed and one on the dog bed… soft snoring can be heard. Very comforting
We have been out for our morning walk (at 7am) and will go back out mid-day to Villa Julie for a track in the snow and a romp in the fields. I will keep a very close eye on Charlie Brown!!! “Why?” you ask. Well my Mr. Brown decided to relocate a few deer from a hollow to greener pastures the last time we went to Villa Julie College. He disappeared over a knoll… I though nothing of it until one lone deer came flying out of the hollow, up the knoll and right past me, under Zelda’s nose and across the field. Zelda gave chase, but returned immediately. I figured Charlie would appear and I’d reel him in as he went by… so I waited… a minute… my brain computing that he should have appeared within seconds and whoa baby, deer don’t travel alone…. the rest of the deer pack and Charlie must have gone through the hollow and to ?????
Now I panic and begin calling Charlie Brown…. he does not respond. It had snowed the week before and although the fields were clear, the woods were full of icy, sharp snow pack, waiting to melt with warmer temps and sunlight that might eventually pierce the tree cover of the woods. I knew the deer would out distance Charlie quickly and called his name over and over, figuring he would return soon. The minutes ticked by…. I screamed his name, Zelda looked in one direction, then another. I called a friend and told her to come, with her husband to help me find him. It was her husband’s birthday and he had family over sitting down to an early dinner… they said they were on the way…. I sat in the middle of the field where I could see in all directions. Zelda pointed to the south, over another rise in the terrain. Charlie appeared, tongue to the ground, smile from ear to ear… cut feet from running in the icy woodlands…. not at all concerned about anything. He ran over to tell Zelda and me what a great time he had and he was very sure he could have caught the deer if the ground had been clear. I hugged the brat, called off the search party–wishing my friend’s husband Happy Birthday…. and told Charlie that was the last time he’d be chasing deer in those fields…. so today, he will be collared and I’ll be on alert!
I’m hoping this snow is the beginning and end of the Lion part of March…. I’m more than looking forward to the “out like a lamb” part of the equation.
